The lime tradionally is chewed along with the Betel nut wrapped inside a quid of Siri leaf to make the package active. Traditionally about ¼ of a whole betel nut would be put inside one leaf along with a pinch of lime and a little Gambir flavoring, the whole quid would be put into the mouth and chewed swallowing all the juices that were released.
Arecoline, a volatile oil is released from the nut by saliva and lime. The betel nut contains Chavicol, Allylpyrocathechol, Chavibetol & Cadinene. Interesting enough, Arecoline is in the same cholinergic alkaloids group as muscarine which is found in the Fly Agaric mushroom!!
